Classic Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
Dry
1¾ cups (220 g) all-purpose flour
1½ cups (300 g) sugar
¾ cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
1½ tsp baking powder
1½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
Wet
2 large eggs
1 cup (240 ml) milk
½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup (240 ml) hot water or hot coffee (enhances chocolate flavor)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans (or one 9×13-inch pan).Mix dry ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.Add wet ingredients
Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth.Add hot liquid
Slowly pour in the hot water or coffee, mixing gently. The batter will be thin—this is normal.Bake
Pour batter into prepared pan(s).
Bake for 30–35 minutes (9×13) or 25–30 minutes (round pans), until a toothpick comes out clean.Cool
Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
Optional Chocolate Frosting
½ cup (115 g) butter, softened
⅔ cup cocoa powder
3 cups powdered sugar
⅓ cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
Beat everything together until fluffy. Add more milk if needed.
